 About the Program

The therapeutic value of sports never seemed clearer to the organizers of Street Soccer Chicago after seeing, “Kicking It”. Witnessing how soccer was being used as a vehicle to help transition people out of homelessness in various parts of the world motivated the institution of a sports-based program in the Chicago area. This goal-centered program that began in September of 2008 has resulted in men transitioning out of shelter living, and given rise to a greater community awareness of the issue of homelessness and a subsequent desire for increased involvement from many.

The Chicago program has been recognized by media outlets such as the Chicago Tribune and the Beacon News for their inspiring achievements.

24-year-old Chicago player, John Klicpera joined the newly formed homeless soccer team when the opportunity arose in part to keep out of harm’s way. He had never even played soccer before.

“Soccer brought (the guys) more together. We never talked to each other before,” says Klicpera. “Soccer makes each of us a better person.”

The hope is that this program will continue to evolve and that more teams will develop throughout the Chicagoland area, to help benefit the homeless community.
