SSUSA is proud to congratulate our SSUSA Youth Program Coach & Advisory Board Member, Philip Jones on being the San Jose Earthquakes Nominee for the MLS Community MVP. As the team’s nominee, Philip attended the MLS All-Star Game in Chicago, IL on August 3rd, selecting his mother, SSUSA Bay Area’s biggest fan, to join as his guest.
In the not so distant past, Jones was an unlikely role models for the youth he now coaches. Philip joined Street Soccer USA as a participant when he was struggling with homelessness and drug addiction. He ended up in jail for six months – during which he dedicated his time to remaining sober and getting his life back on track. Upon getting out of jail, Jones rejoined SSUSA with a renewed focus and commitment and after attending the Street Soccer USA National Cup and Homeless World Cup in 2016, Philip decided he wanted to give back and spread social change through soccer as a coach and mentor for youth. As a Street Soccer USA trained Coach, Philip is now working with low-income and homeless youth in the Western Addition and Tenderloin of San Francisco as many as five days a week. Philip is a kind, friendly, and influential figure, who is a role-model for the youth he coaches because he can relate to what they are going through. In reflecting on his journey, Jones said, “I couldn’t have had a better experience. I love where I have made it to in this program and couldn’t be any happier doing what I can to give back to what was so freely given to me!!!”
Phillip is a inspiration to his community for his determination, dedication and never give up attitude. In February, Philip joined the SSUSA Advisory Board, and now has a leadership role in the organization. For more about Philip’s story, please visit:
