On April 6, the SSUSA New York team hosted a Street League Festival at Bush Clinton Park in Redhook. The event combined the ‘Day of service’ for both Davison College and NYU’s Tisch Institute of Global Sport, the Street League festival for U16 and U23 age groups, the construction of 2 SSUSA Mini-pitches for the local Community Club, and voting for local participatory budgeting. Davidson College’s 15 volunteers along with SSUSA staff constructed the mini-pitches from 8am-12pm, and then NYU’s 30 volunteers filled in as referees and took on other tournament roles from 12-4pm. All local participants were able to vote on local participatory budget options which were made available to them by the staff of the District Council member Carlos Menchaca. Overall, 70 participants attended from all SSUSA NY communities. Sunset Park won the U16 age group, while Redhook won the U23. The event was an overall success and will have a lasting impact as the mini-pitches constructed will serve the Redhook Community for the remainder of the spring, as well as the summer and fall.

“The lovely weather coupled with the great setup created a fun and competitive environment for all the teams that participated. The volunteers had a blast while contributing everywhere they could. I had a great time and would love to contribute anyway I can in future SSUSA events.”
