Theodore Wildman van Beuren (Captain, ’05) was a man in full. I remember a swashbuckling footballer who proved himself a leader of men on the pitch during his years as a Tiger. His playing style was bold and creative, selfless and passionate. Luckily for many of us, these qualities of his were not confined to the soccer field. He was admirably schooled in every grace, carrying himself with equal aplomb on the balustrade of Cottage, on the beaches of San Sebastian, in the boardrooms of NYC, or running a nonprofit with the excellence and an acute sense of propriety that you came to expect from the man.

He was the best of friends to many, loyal to a fault with me. The heroic energy he put into all his relationships was the stuff of envy; his joviality and gregariousness were a sight to see.

TVB knew what it meant to be noble, not in the aristocratic sense but in the idealist one. If you got to know him deeply, he was somewhat of a gnostic Christian just fighting the good fight, and I’m grateful to have been in the same race (2 Timothy 4:7). I called Teddy “brother” too, but he was much more than that - a mentor, a spiritual confidant... I really just wish I could have told him that he was one of my heroes, too.

Teddy van Beuren with Lawrence Cann

Working with vulnerable populations as we do, our group is not unaccustomed to loss. In losing Teddy, we lost a passionate, generous, and purposeful leader and friend. Teddy van Beuren was not vulnerable. He was unstoppable. He made us feel we were too.

This truth is only more evident in his passing. Teddy's legacy will live on in many places and in many ways. It will be cherished, honored, and furthered here at Street Soccer USA. Teddy dedicated more than a decade of his life to our mission in Philadelphia and New York and was named chairman of our NYC Board. Teddy cared deeply about kids, especially those growing up in poverty. He spoke freely of his love for soccer and the lessons, values, and deep friendships the sport afforded him.

He worked tirelessly ensuring the sport could benefit the least advantaged youth in the same way it had him, lending his personal time and talent, and rallying hundreds of his friends and colleagues to do the same.

We hold Teddy up unflinchingly as an example to everyone. Teddy was blessed with talent, charisma, and good nature. To whom much is given, much is expected. Teddy, even with his many blessings, exceeded all we might have expected of him in terms of giving back.

Each Monday, Teddy would send a motivational email with an inspiring quote to a list of his friends and colleagues. Below was his last “Monday Motivation.”

“I have finally concluded, maybe that's what life is about: there's a lot of despair, but also the odd moment of beauty, where time is no longer the same. It's as if those strains of music created a sort of interlude in time, something suspended, an elsewhere that had come to us, an always within never. Yes, that's it, an always within never.”

– Muriel Barbery

It was never imaginable to lose Teddy like this. The joy and motivation he blessed us with will always be with us.

TVB Park // From The van Beuren Family

Dear Friends of Teddy,

Teddy's passion for life was contagious and far reaching. His ethos and energy to connect people and build community was legendary. We've always appreciated Teddy's love and generosity of spirit and now we are moved by the generosity of spirit that continues to inspire many of his friends and communities.

The TVB Soccer Park and Learning Center will carry on his ethos. It will help create connection and community through Teddy's favorite sport: one which cultivated some of his most lasting relationships and inspired his passion for life.

Thank you for being a part of this project to honor Teddy. The lessons learned here, both on and off the field, will become an important touchstone in the lives of thousands of children in the years to come.

We love you Teddy.

Onward,

Ted, Judy, Mikey and Libby van Beuren

TVB Park // About the Park

Rendering of the park plan

The TVB Street Soccer Park and Learning Center will serve as an iconic central hub, home field, and clubhouse for thousands of New York City youth who are otherwise priced out of the benefits of youth sports. Dedicated to and named for Teddy, the park will be a lasting tribute to Teddy’s generous spirit, passion for life, soccer, and his fellow human beings, and to his determined will to make positive social impact with his life, lifting up every life he touched.

Teddy, among his many endeavors, served nonprofit Street Soccer USA faithfully for nearly a decade as a volunteer and founding board member of both Street Soccer NYC and Street Soccer Philadelphia. He became chairman of Street Soccer NYC in 2021.

IMPACT:

Teddy understood the importance of the simple values of play and fellowship in the lives of children and no other board member was more focused on measuring and quantifying the impact of that activity. Street Soccer USA’s evidence-based methodology and curriculum teaches foundational skills through soccer, preparing youth for success in academics and in life.

A study of NYC youth from 2019 revealed that among SSUSA participants, chronic absenteeism dropped by nearly two thirds and participation was correlated with improved math and english language arts proficiency.

The TVB Park and Learning Center will help cement the impact Teddy strove to achieve and extend it to thousands of more kids for years to come.

Why The Park Matters

The centerpiece of the Street Soccer USA’s model for social impact is the field. By establishing a high quality, safe space to play and learn in honor of Teddy, Street Soccer can engage youth and add in its key ingredients: curriculum, trained coaches and volunteers, equipment, practices, tournaments, homework help, and social service wrap-arounds.

One Step Further

Beyond providing an accessible and inspiring home field for practices, games, tournaments, and community events, the TVB Park includes a shipping container classroom and club house which hosts trainings for community coaches, homework-help and mentor sessions, and skill building opportunities including digital marketing training and coding classes available to SSUSA players hosted onsite before and after practice.

TVB Park // Potential Locations

Locations of Street Soccer USA parks in the NY area

SSUSA’s community partners and elected official advocates have identified venues in Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island in high need areas where Street Soccer USA programs will thrive.

Back up venues include existing SSUSA locations in East New York, Flatbush, and Red Hook.

Street Soccer USA is in conversations with local elected officials and land developers on securing one or more of the locations. The land will be leased to Street Soccer USA for $0 for a minimum of 15 years.

Blue hexagons on the map are existing SSUSA program locations with space for the Park and red hexagons represent potential new locations. The TVB Park will be the first of its kind in NYC and the iconic HUB for SSUSA in New York.
